View details →What the oil pump does on a burner
On a light oil burner the pump draws oil from the tank, builds the pressure the nozzle needs for atomisation, and returns the excess through the bypass. Nozzle pressure, and therefore spray quality, depends on the pump holding a steady delivery across the whole firing range — a pump that is losing pressure shows up as a soft, smoky flame and rising fuel consumption well before it fails outright.
Pumps are matched by rotation direction, shaft and coupling type, port layout, pressure range and the viscosity of the oil being fired. Shaft seals and couplings are the usual wear items; on pumps with a solenoid cut-off, the coil is a separate part and can often be replaced on its own.
- Typical symptoms: loss of nozzle pressure, unstable or smoky flame, oil leaking at the shaft seal, noisy or cavitating pump.
- Before ordering, confirm the code on the pump nameplate, the rotation direction viewed from the shaft end, and whether your installation is one-pipe or two-pipe.
- Send us the pump nameplate code together with the burner model and we will identify the correct replacement.

Oil Pump FAQs
My flame is soft and smoky — is the pump failing?
Falling nozzle pressure is one cause, but combustion set-up, nozzle wear and filter blockage come first. Send us the burner model, the pump nameplate code and the symptom history and we will help you narrow it down before you order parts.
