What the ignition transformer does

The ignition transformer steps the burner supply voltage up to the high-voltage spark that lights the fuel at the electrodes. It only runs during the ignition attempt, but it is among the most frequently replaced parts on a burner because it works in the harshest position in the machine — close to the flame, exposed to heat and to any moisture or oil that finds its way into the burner housing.

What matters when replacing one is the output voltage and current class, the duty cycle, the supply voltage and frequency, the mounting and terminal layout, and the distance it can drive to the electrodes without losing spark energy. A transformer that is electrically adequate but mounted further from the electrodes than it is rated for will give a weak or intermittent spark, which looks exactly like a fuel problem.

  • Typical symptoms: no spark, spark present but the burner will not light, intermittent ignition in damp or cold weather, cracked or carbon-tracked housing.
  • Send us the transformer code and the burner model; if the label is unreadable, a photo of the unit and its mounting is enough to start.

Ignition FAQs

The burner sparks but will not light — new transformer or fuel problem?

A spark that is present but weak — often intermittent in damp or cold weather — points to the transformer, the ignition cable or the electrode gap. A strong spark with no ignition points to fuel delivery. Send the burner model and what you observe and we will help you tell the two apart.
