What the damper actuator does

The damper actuator sets the position of the air damper, and on many burners the matching fuel valve, so that air and fuel move together as the burner modulates. It converts the control signal from the controller or the modulating regulator into a shaft angle, and it is the component that decides whether a modulating burner tracks its setpoint cleanly or hunts around it.

Selection is as much mechanical as electrical: torque, travel in degrees, shaft profile or adapter, and whether the actuator is spring-return on loss of power. On the control side the supply voltage and signal type must match whatever is driving it — a modulating voltage or current signal, a three-point raise-and-lower drive, or a simple open and close arrangement.

  • Typical symptoms: damper sticks or drifts, burner output hunts on modulation, actuator hums but does not move, position feedback out of step.
  • Give us the actuator code, or failing that the burner model and the damper shaft dimensions.

Damper FAQs

My burner output hunts around the setpoint — is it the actuator?

A drifting or sticking damper is a common cause, but the tuning of the modulating regulator and the fuel valve linkage matter just as much. Send the actuator code and the burner model and we will help you separate mechanical from control-side causes.
