What the gas pressure regulator does
The gas pressure regulator takes the varying inlet pressure of the supply and holds a stable pressure at the burner, so the air-fuel ratio established during commissioning stays valid across the firing range. Where the regulator is built into a combined gas train block with the safety shut-off valves, it also forms part of the section that the valve proving system has to test.
Sizing one is not only a matter of pipe size: the inlet pressure range, the outlet pressure you need and its setting range, the gas family (natural gas, LPG or town gas), the flow range of the burner, and whether a spring-loaded or pilot-operated type suits the duty all change the answer. Work on a live gas train should always be carried out by a qualified gas technician, and the set pressure has to be verified with the burner running as part of the combustion set-up.
